Communication Fundamentals
1. EtherCAT hardware link
Cable requirements: Minimum Cat5 Ethernet cable, using 1/2/3/6 four core wires, RJ45 interface automatically recognizes straight/cross lines, maximum cable length between devices is 100m.
E-bus rule: The bus coupler defaults to outputting 5V/2A E-bus current; If the terminal string is too long or there are too many modules, EL9400/EL9410 must be inserted for power supply. TwinCAT can calculate the total load of E-bus online.
Passive terminal layout restrictions: Continuous installation of no more than 2 passive terminals is allowed, otherwise it will affect the quality of the E-bus signal.
2. EtherCAT State Machine (ESM)
The entire series of terminals follow five standard operating states:
Initialize: No communication;
Pre op: only email communication, configuration parameters;
Safe op: The process data is normal and the output is locked in a safe state;
Op (Running): Fully functional and in normal working condition;
Boot: Only used for firmware updates, disable regular communication.
3. CoE interface description
Most of the passive terminals in this series do not have CoE parameters;
The diagnostic model can read status, version, and fault information through the CoE object dictionary (addresses 0x1000, 0x8000, etc.);
Parameter modification can be achieved through TwinCAT or PLC function blocks, supporting offline/online configuration, and a startup list can be set to prevent parameter loss after device replacement.
EEPROM has a write life limit, and it is recommended to enable the NoCoeStorage function for high-frequency rewriting.
Installation, wiring and specifications
1. General installation requirements
Rail: compatible with EN 60715 standard 35mm DIN rail, divided into two types: 7.5mm/15mm.
Installation posture: Priority should be given to horizontal installation to ensure adequate ventilation space above and below; Reserve larger heat dissipation gaps for high load modules.
Mechanical reinforcement: In vibration/impact scenarios, the distance between the fixed points of the guide rail is ≤ 5cm; the maximum number of 12mm terminals per section is 64, and the maximum number of 24mm terminals per section is 32.
Disassembly and assembly: The entire machine must be powered off, and the orange unlocking buckle must be pulled to remove the terminal. Violent insertion and removal are prohibited.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD): Release static electricity from the human body before operation, and do not touch the contact points; EL9011/9012 terminal caps must be installed at the end of the terminal group.
2. Explosion proof special specifications (ATEX/IECEx/cFMus)
Installation requirements for explosion-proof areas: The entire machine should be installed in cabinets with an IP54 rating or higher; Dust scenes are upgraded in protection according to their levels.
Voltage limit: The instantaneous overvoltage shall not exceed 40% of the rated value; The temperature resistance of the cable needs to match the temperature of the connection point.
Operation restrictions: Terminal insertion and removal, code adjustment, and fuse replacement can only be carried out after power failure in the explosion-proof area.
Certification mark: Distinguish the explosion-proof level of gas and dust, and mark the corresponding Ex mark on the product nameplate.
3. Wiring specifications
Power supply standard: SELV/PELV safety ultra-low voltage must be used.
Terminal block type:
Standard EL/KL series: Spring terminal, screwdriver press to open the hole and plug in the wire;
HD high-density terminal: Single core wire can be inserted directly without the need for tools.
Wire diameter and stripping length:
Conventional terminal: 0.08~2.5mm ², stripped wire of 8~10mm;
HD terminal: 0.08~1.5mm ², compatible with corresponding specifications for fine wire/wire nose.
Shielded wiring: Analog and encoder cables must use shielded twisted pair cables, with the shielding layer connected to EL9070/EL9195.
Insulation test: Disconnect the PE protective ground before testing to avoid damaging the device.
4. Potential group planning
The EL9080 isolation terminal is used to divide different voltage circuits, and it is strictly prohibited to share power contacts for different voltages.
Multiple feeding terminals can be used in conjunction to divide multiple independent potential zones within a terminal block.
Indicator lights and diagnostic functions
1. Definition of general indicator lights
Power light (green): constantly on=corresponding voltage is normal, off=no input;
Fault light (red): It lights up when the fuse is blown, under voltage, or surge fault occurs;
RUN running light: flashes at different frequencies, corresponding to the five EtherCAT state machines.
2. Diagnostic signals
Diagnostic terminals (EL9110, EL9210, EL9410, EL9540, etc.) will generate corresponding points in the TwinCAT process image:
PowerOK: The power supply is in normal condition;
FuseError: Fuse failure;
Undervoltage: undervoltage alarm;
Overvoltage: Overvoltage alarm.
Configuration, maintenance, and scrapping
Configuration: All passive terminals in the series do not require address configuration, and can be recognized by TwinCAT upon power on. Only the diagnostic bit needs to be read.
Firmware: This series is passive hardware, without firmware, and does not require upgrading.
Daily maintenance: Regularly clean dust, check wiring fastening, and check the status of indicator lights; Explosion proof/outdoor equipment should undergo cable aging inspection.
Scrap: According to local electronic waste regulations, it should be recycled and cannot be discarded at will.
