The installation and use manual for MTL4850 HART multiplexer provides RS485 communication interface between on-site intelligent devices and PC based HART management software, supporting safe/hazardous area applications. It can be connected through three methods: HTP-SC32, HMP-HM64, and CPH-SC series backboards. A single module can manage up to 32 HART devices, and a single link can access up to 63 modules (a total of 2016 channels), covering the entire process of installation, wiring, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance. It is compatible with mainstream DCS systems and comes with DD/DTM drivers.
1. Core positioning of the product
MTL4850 is a HART communication multiplexing system that enables a single PC to configure, calibrate, and maintain intelligent on-site equipment throughout the factory. It serves as a bridge between safe/hazardous area equipment and management software.
Single MTL4850 module: supports 32 HART channels
Single RS485 link: up to 63 modules can be mounted, with a total of 2016 channels
Communication method: RS485 half duplex, with a maximum transmission distance of 1000m
2. Three connection schemes
Scheme model, channel characteristics, applicable scenarios
Integrated HTP-SC32 32 onboard MTL4850, easy deployment without additional interface security zone
Split combination HCU16/AO+HMP-HM64 64 4 HCU unit combination, flexible expansion of safety zone multi-channel expansion
Intrinsic safety backboard CPH-SC16 (R)/SC32 (R) 16/32 integrated MTL4500 isolator, certified for hazardous area intrinsic safety applications
3. Installation and mechanical specifications
Installation method: DIN rail installation (DMK01 kit)/panel installation (SMS01 kit)
Power supply requirements: 24V DC redundancy, voltage range 20-35V DC
Wiring specification: Maximum wire diameter 2.5mm ² (12AWG)
Flat cable: 20 pin (HM64RIB20) up to 15m long; 34 pin (HM64RIB34) up to 2m long
4. Electrical and Communication Configuration
RS485 wiring: Two wire system (A/B), shielding layer connected to C terminal, supporting daisy chain
Address setting: 6-digit binary DIP switch, unique addresses 0-63
HMP-HM64 special rule: only set even addresses, automatically take odd addresses from the module
Baud rate: adaptive 1200/9600/19200/38400
5. Key points for module installation
MTL4850 module: Align with the slot and press in place, tighten the fixing screws
MTL4500 isolation module: dangerous area wiring should be connected to blue terminals, and unauthorized operation with live wires is prohibited
Power on self-test: PWR green light is always on → FAULT light flashes and scans → turn off is normal

6. Fault diagnosis and maintenance
LED status description
PWR (green): constantly on=power supply is normal; Extinguish=no power
FAULT (red): off=running; Blinking=scanning; Constant illumination=malfunction
HOST/HART (yellow): Blinking=Communication is normal
Troubleshooting process: power supply → module installation → wiring → isolator replacement
Maintenance cycle: Comprehensive inspection every 2 years, shortened cycle in harsh environments
Repair requirements: MTL4500/4850 malfunction is prohibited from self repair and needs to be returned to the factory
7. Software and system compatibility
Driver support: DD files, FDT/DTM components, free official website download
Compatible systems: Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Expert, Siemens ET200M, Yokogawa Centum, etc
Function: Equipment diagnosis, status monitoring, alarm event logging, valve locator management
Key questions and answers
Question 1: How many HART devices can the MTL4850 system manage at most? How to achieve it?
Answer: A single RS485 link can manage up to 2016 HART devices. The implementation method is that one MTL4850 module supports 32 channels, with a maximum of 63 modules mounted on a single channel, resulting in 32 × 63=2016.
Question 2: What hardware must be used for hazardous area applications? What are the core requirements for wiring?
Answer: The hazardous area must use CPH-SC16 (R)/SC32 (R) backplane+MTL4500 series isolation module. Core requirements: Dangerous area cables should be connected to the blue terminal of the isolator, and the backplane should not have intrinsic safety certification; During live maintenance, dummy modules are required to protect the connectors and avoid contact with safe zone circuits.
Question 3: How to set the MTL4850 module address? What are the special rules for the HMP-HM64 interface?
Answer: The address is set by a 6-digit binary DIP switch, with values ranging from 0 to 63 and must be unique. HMP-HM64 special rule: Only supports setting even addresses, and the second module automatically uses adjacent odd addresses (such as setting 24 → module 1=24, module 2=25).
