Pilz's official operating manual for PSEN opII4H series safety light curtains, version 4.0, is applicable to all protection heights of this series of products (order numbers 632060-632071). The manual system covers the entire life cycle of product definition, safety specifications, functional principles, project configuration, installation and calibration, wiring debugging, operation and maintenance, and accessory ordering. The core goal is to guide qualified personnel to deploy products correctly, ensure that they achieve hazardous area protection functions in industrial scenarios, and comply with international standards such as EN ISO 13849-1 and IEC 61496.

(2) Core functional characteristics
Beam encoding technology: supports both A/B encoding, which can avoid mutual interference between two parallel installed light curtains. The minimum installation spacing is as low as 262mm (when the working distance is less than 2.5m).
Auto start/restart: automatically activated when the protected area is unobstructed after power on (OSSD output ON); After the obstruction is removed, it will automatically restart after ≥ 80ms without manual operation.
No blind spot installation: By selecting the PSEN opII Adv Bracket Kit (order number 632016/632017), it is possible to achieve no blind spots on both sides when the protection height is ≥ 300mm, and no blind spots on one side when it is 150mm.
Status indication: Both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with LED indicator lights, which can display the operating status, encoding mode, reception quality, and fault type (over temperature/under voltage/stray light).
Fault protection: When detecting beam interruption, OSSD fault, stray light interference, etc., OSSD immediately switches to OFF state and needs to be restarted for recovery.
Key operational process specifications
(1) Key points of project configuration
Safe distance calculation: according to the formula
S=K * (t 1+t 2)+C calculation, where K is the approach velocity (1600mm/s for S>500mm, 2000mm/s for S ≤ 500mm), t1 is the light curtain response time, t2 is the machine stop time, and C=128mm (fixed value for hand protection).
Environmental adaptation: Keep away from strong light sources/reflective surfaces (minimum distance D=0.131m, when working distance ≥ 3m, D=working distance x tan 2.5 °), avoid electromagnetic interference, smoke/dust environment.
Multi light curtain installation: When installed in parallel, no coding is required to maintain a 2 × D spacing, and coding can shorten the spacing (adjusted according to the working distance); Adjacent installations require coding or shading to avoid interference.
(2) Installation and Calibration
Installation preparation: Clean the installation surface (free of dust and oil stains), with a flatness error of ≤ 1.5mm. Fix the transmitter/receiver according to the standard kit (4 flexible brackets+fasteners) to ensure that they are at the same height and parallel.
Alignment operation: It is recommended to use the PSEN opII laser alignment tool (Order No. 632014). When there is no laser, it needs to be powered on and adjusted to the OSSD status. The LED is green and is located in the center of the rotation adjustment range.
Torque requirements: The torque for fixing screws is 3Nm, for clamping screws it is 1.1Nm, and for fixing screws it is 0.7Nm to avoid displacement caused by vibration.
(3) Wiring and Debugging
Wiring specification: M12 5-pin interface is used, and the transmitter/receiver pins are distinguished between power and signal terminals according to the coding type (no coding/A code/B code). OSSD1 and OSSD2 are prohibited from being connected in series or parallel, and the cable should be kept away from high current cables.
System connection: Two evaluation devices with feasibility monitoring (such as PNOZelog, PDP67 ION, etc.) need to be connected to ensure that the test pulse ≤ 300 µ s can be bridged.
Function verification: Use a 30mm test rod (order number 632019) to interrupt the beam at three points near the transmitter, receiver, and center of the protection area. The OSSD needs to be switched to OFF, and the receiver LED displays red.
(4) Operation and maintenance
Regular inspection: Every 6 months, including panel cleaning (using only wet cotton cloth, alcohol/solvents are prohibited), screw tightening, and safety function verification; The frequency of cleaning needs to be increased in harsh environments.
Fault handling: In case of overheating/undervoltage/stray light faults, first check the environmental conditions, and then power off and restart; Scratches on the panel require direct replacement of the product.
After modification inspection: replace the light curtain, adjust the wiring (if there is no coding → coding), and modify the installation position, a new risk assessment and safety distance calculation are required.

Extended application: Muting function
The mute function can temporarily suspend the safety light curtain protection and allow materials to pass through hazardous areas. It needs to be equipped with a mute sensor, a mute box (order number 6C000181), and a safety controller to achieve this. It supports three modes:
Key requirements for applicable scenarios of silent mode
X-muting: Two sensor beams intersect in the hazardous area for bidirectional entry and exit of materials, with a triggering interval of ≤ 4s after the protected area
L-type silent material moves out of the danger zone in one direction, with two sensors arranged along the transportation direction. The length of the object is greater than the distance between the sensors and the distance from the sensor to the protection zone
T-muting: Four sensors are divided into two groups for bidirectional entry and exit of hazardous areas. The length of the object is greater than the sum of the distance between all sensors and the distance to the protected area, and the sum is greater than 500mm

(2) Product ordering rules
The transmitter/receiver models are distinguished by protection height, for example: a protection height of 150mm corresponds to transmitter 632260 and receiver 632360; 1800mm corresponds to transmitter 632271 and receiver 632371.
Accessories need to be ordered separately, and the mute kit should be matched with the corresponding light curtain model to ensure that the sensor wavelength does not interfere with the light curtain.
