ABB REG216/REG216 Classic Numerical Generator Protection

ABB REG216/REG216 Classic is a digital protection device used for generator and complete transformer protection. It has two core advantages: modular hardware and optional protection functions. It adopts full digital signal processing technology and supports PC menu assisted setting, continuous hardware self checking, fault recording and self checking recording functions. It has a wide parameter setting range and good long-term stability; The device provides a rich protection function library, covering various types such as differential protection, overcurrent protection, and ground fault protection. It can expand remote I/O units through the MVB bus and is compatible with multiple process control systems. The difference between REG216 and REG216 Classic lies in the different binary process interface modules, which can meet the reliability requirements of different scenarios through redundant configuration.

Basic positioning

ABB REG216/REG216 Classic is a digital generator protection device mainly used for the protection of generators and complete transformers.

The device adopts a modular software and hardware design, which can flexibly adapt to different primary system scales and protection schemes, achieving full scenario economic applications.

The core difference between the two versions lies in the binary process interface module: REG216 configuration 216GD61a module; REG216 Classic configuration includes 216GE61, 216GA61, and 216GA62 modules.

Hardware Structure and Technical Parameters

hardware architecture

The device is divided into two parts: a primary system interface and a parallel bus electronic unit, which are connected through prefabricated shielded cables and have strong electromagnetic interference resistance.

The electronic unit adopts a 19 inch 6U rack with 21 standard slots built-in. The core modules include:

Processing unit 216VC62a: 32-bit 80486DX-2 processor, Flash EPROM storage program, supports RS-423 interface, event recording.

Analog input unit 216EA62: 24 inputs, synchronized sampling every 6 channels, sampling frequency of 600Hz at 50Hz and 720Hz at 60Hz.

Power supply unit 216NG61/62/63: Input 36-312V DC, output 24V DC/150W, supports parallel redundancy.

Support the expansion of remote I/O units (500RIO11) through MVB bus to reduce on-site wiring; Can be connected to 4-20mA current, 0-10V voltage, and temperature sensor signals such as Pt100.

Rated parameters: rated current 1/2/5A, rated voltage 100/200V, rated frequency 50/60Hz.

Sampling performance: 15 bit dynamic range, 12 samples per cycle, digital filtering effectively suppresses DC components and harmonics.

Environment and insulation: working temperature -10 ℃~+55 ℃, storage temperature -40 ℃~+85 ℃; The insulation test voltage is 2kV AC/1min, and the impulse voltage is 5kV.


Setting, testing, and redundancy

Setting method

Using Windows platform CAP2/316 software for parameter tuning, supporting online/offline programming, compatible with Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP systems.

The protection function can be activated by dragging and dropping, and the protection setting characteristic curve can be displayed intuitively.

Test function

Self check function: continuous hardware self check+software loop test, which can view analog input, switch status, and protection measurement values, replacing traditional periodic injection testing.

Injection testing: Support OMICRON and other testing devices to inject voltage/current, and conduct 100% system testing at the 216GW62 input transformer component terminals.

redundant configuration

Supports power redundancy and complete system redundancy, can be configured as two independent hardware racks, or two sets of independent hardware in a single rack, to meet different reliability requirements.


Communication and Interface

The standard interface is compatible with multiple process control systems and supports one-way uploading of digital status, events, measured values, and protection parameters.

Optional communication protocols such as LON and IEC 60870-5-103 can be used to achieve fiber optic communication through PC cards, with a maximum data transmission rate of 1.5Mbit/s.

The event recording capacity is 256, the time stamp resolution is 1ms, and the daily time deviation is less than 10s without remote synchronization.
