ABB SPA-ZC 400 Ethernet Gateway Installation and Debugging Manual

Product positioning and core applications

SPA-ZC 400 is a protocol conversion gateway specifically designed to adapt to ABB REF541/3/5, REM543/5, RET541/3/5 series SPA protocol protection and measurement devices. It enables old-fashioned SPA serial port devices to connect to the IEC61850 substation bus, solving the pain point of traditional SPA devices being unable to connect to digital station control systems.

Two major hardware versions

Basic version SPA-ZC400: Ethernet interface only, SPA over TCP/IP communication;

SPA-ZC400EMP/EMG Enhanced Edition: Additional fiber optic SPA/LON dual parallel communication, supporting star and ring fiber bus topologies, hardware jumper switching bus modes, with LON service test pins.

core functionality

Protocol Conversion: SPA ↔  IEC61850 MMS, Simultaneously supporting SPA over TCP and Modbus/TCP;

Complete IEC61850 service: report RCB, GOOSE peer-to-peer fast communication, SNTP time synchronization, fault recording COMTRADE file upload;

Data mapping: Modeling SPA data such as protection measurement, alarm, control, circuit breaker status, temperature, etc. as IEC61850 logical nodes;

Fault recording forwarding: Read the IED MEDREC recording data and automatically convert it to the 1999 version COMTRADE format for client download;

Status diagnosis: Online monitoring of gateway itself, SPA link, circuit breaker operation, and communication fault statistics.


Hardware specifications and interfaces

1. Physical parameters

Dimensions 195 × 50 × 26mm, weight 130g; operating temperature -10~+55 ℃, storage -40~+70 ℃, meeting the full set of IEC 60068 environmental and EMC electromagnetic compatibility tests (surge 4kV, static 8kV, etc.).

2. Interface classification

IED interface: 9-pin D-type interface directly connected to REF/REM/RET protection device;

Ethernet LAN: RJ45 electrical port, LC/MT-RJ multimode fiber, with LINK/RX/TX status lights;

Optional SPA/LON fiber optic port: Glass ST fiber optic/plastic fiber optic transceiver, equipped with RX indicator light and LON service pin;

Status LED: power green light, comprehensive DIAG fault light, SPA/LON receiving indicator light.

3. Support peripherals

Compatible with industrial switches such as RuggedCom and OnTime, as well as fiber optic transceivers, suitable for industrial network environments in substations.


Software environment: CET configuration tool (Communication Engineering Tool)

1. Operating environment

Windows 2000/XP/Server2003, Pre installed is required NET Framework1.1、SQL Server, Occupy 20-100GB of hard drive space.

2. Installation/uninstallation process

First uninstall the old version of CET, close the software, and then run the installation program;

Supporting Connectivity Package: includes specialized packages such as REM543/5, REF54x, RET54x, etc., which can be downloaded from the official website. After installation, the corresponding IED version needs to be enabled through the manager;

Uninstalling only removes CET and retains it NET and SQL prevent other ABB software from failing.

3. Core competencies of tools

Engineering creation, IEC61850 object tree building, AR application file import, CID/ICD configuration file import and export, IP query, GOOSE configuration, waveform management, gateway remote restart.

Installation steps of the whole machine

1. Mechanical installation

Locked and fixed on the side of the REF/REM/RET protection device through a D-type interface, the LAN port is connected to the industrial switch and connected to the station control IEC61850 bus; Enhanced version with additional installation of SPA/LON fiber optic cables.

2. Computer network configuration

SPA-ZC400 default IP: 192.168.2.10, subnet mask 255.255.0;

Debugging PC to set the same IP address as the network segment (such as 192.168.2.1);

Verify link connectivity using ping 192.168.2.10;

CET has a built-in IP query tool that broadcasts and scans all online gateways on the LAN to read MAC and firmware versions.


IEC61850 Engineering Configuration Full Process 

6.1 Engineering and Object Tree Architecture (Standard LD/LN/DO/DA Model)

New project, add SPA-ZC400 IEC61850 device object;

Automatically generate LD0 logical devices: gateway self diagnosis, LLN0 root logical node, all RCB/GOOSE control block carriers;

Add LD1 as a logic device for docking with IEDs, imported from CAP505 AR device application model;

Hierarchical construction: Device → LD → LN → Data Object DO → Data Attribute DA, supports drag and drop, copy, and wizard to create LN/DO.

6.2 Key Configuration Items

(1) Network IP parameters (static IP, no DHCP)

Device IP, subnet, default gateway;

Primary/backup SNTP time servers, time zone offset (± 720 minutes), event marker ClockNotSynchronized when time is abnormal;

(2) SPA serial communication parameters

SPA site address, access password, baud rate (1200-38400, REF54x GOOSE mode fixed at 38400);

Three time synchronization modes: gateway synchronization with IED, gateway only timing, and time reading from IED;

Event polling switch, automatic fault recording upload (DR Upload).

(3) Dataset

Filtering the measurement, status, and protection signals that need to be uploaded through the dataset editor, grouping them according to functional constraints FC (ST status/MV measurement), is the data source for RCB and GOOSE.

(4) Report Control Block RCB

Implement proactive event upload, support cached reporting (broken chain caching), configurable data change/quality change triggers, cache duration, integrity cycle, and maximum number of clients.

(5) GOOSE Fast Peer to Peer Communication (only supports binary switch values)

Sending side GoCB: multicast MAC, VLAN priority APPID、 Minimum/maximum transmission cycle; 64 single point signals based on REF device COMM_oUT31/32;

Receiver side GSEInput: matches the multicast address of the other end APPID, Bind local CIGGIO logical nodes and automatically set default bad values when disconnected;

Limitations: Test messages are not supported, only single bit switch interaction is allowed, analog signals do not support GOOSE.

(6) Scaling

Support table lookup and piecewise linear conversion curves, used for converting SPA raw values to engineering dimensions and binding measurement DO for use.

6.3 Configuration Distribution and File Management

After completing the modeling, export the CID file and send it to SPA-ZC400 via FTP. Once the file is sent, the device will automatically restart and take effect;

Support batch reuse of CIDs, allowing for batch configuration of multiple gateways by simply modifying the IP address;

Can export ICD/CID to the backend SCADA IEC61850 client;

The fault recording is automatically saved as three sets of COMTRADE files, yymmddnn.cfg/.dat/inf, and the client FTP reads them to delete and free up space.


Operation and commissioning 

Hardware indicator light verification: If the power is always on and the LAN link street light is flashing, it indicates normal transmission and reception; DIAG green light is normal, red flashing indicates configuration/startup failure;

TCP link ping test to confirm no IP conflicts;

IEC61850 client reads LD0.LLN0.Health status codes (normal OK, no synchronization Warning, configuration error alarm);

The SPA link diagnostic counter (ComDiag) checks the message timeout, number of sent and received messages, and the data quality of INVALID represents SPA communication interruption;

Verify telemetry, remote signaling, and remote control data mapping, and validate GOOSE interlocking signal transmission and reception.


Maintenance, diagnosis, and troubleshooting

1. LED fault code

Red green alternation 1-3-5: normal operation;

1-2 Flashing: firmware image lost;

1-3-4: No configuration file;

1-3-6: CID configuration error.

2. Log retrieval

FTP login gateway (account/password abb), enter the/log directory to download the error log for troubleshooting.

3. Firewall Port Release Checklist

TCP7001(CET/SPA over TCP)、TCP21/20(FTP)、TCP102(MMS/IEC61850)、UDP123(SNTP)、TCP502(Modbus TCP)。

4. Common communication failures

SPA response counter continues to rise: IED SPA address/baud rate/password mismatch;

All data quality is invalid: loose D-type interface, incorrect selection of SPA protocol port for device;

GOOSE signal not updated: multicast VLAN not released, APPID conflict, configuration revision number mismatch;

Timestamp exception: SNTP server offline.


Compliance with IEC61850 standard 

The complete MICS model, SCL, and PICS protocol compliance declaration is the core proof of device compliance:

ACSI service: supports client/server MMS and GOOSE publishing and subscription; Does not support sampling value SAV;

Data model: fully supports core logical nodes of substations such as SPS single point, DPS dual point, ACT protection action, ACD direction protection, MV measurement, WYE three-phase quantity, SPC controllable single point, etc; Partial functions such as harmonics and alternative models are not supported;

SCL configuration language: supports CID offline export, FTP online reading/modifying configuration files;

Protocol stack: TCP/IP MMS, GOOSE multicast, does not support GSSE; Has KEMA A-level certification and is compatible with the full set of IEC61850-6/7-2/7-3/7-4/8-1 standards.
