DEIF PPM 300 Protection and Power Management Controller

Product Basic Positioning

PPM 300 is a multifunctional and intelligent protection and power management controller platform developed by DEIF, designed specifically for marine and offshore industrial applications. Its core applications cover diesel generator sets (including emergency units), inverters with power sources, shaft generators, shore power connections, and control and protection of bus tie circuit breakers. At the same time, it can build customized power management systems to maintain power demand and ensure stable system operation. It also integrates industry-leading fuel optimization technology to balance operational efficiency and economy.

The system adopts a multi master closed-loop communication architecture to fundamentally eliminate single point failures; When a unit fails, the main station function will automatically switch to other hosts to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system throughout the entire process. The hardware adopts high specification industrial design, equipped with the latest processor technology, and has long life adaptability and tolerance to harsh environments.


Core Hardware and Design Features

Modular architecture: The processor, communication, measurement, and IO modules all support on-site replacement and have been certified by the classification society; The module replacement has automatic recognition function, which enables fast and low-cost maintenance, repair and upgrade. The IO module adopts a metal frame, which is flexible and configurable.

Display Unit: Equipped with DU 300 5-inch high-resolution color graphic display screen as standard, with intuitive operation process and icons, it can quickly read real-time data, process alarms, and configure controllers; Supports up to 2 interlocked display units per controller, with multi language adaptation and functional permissions divided by user level.

Plug and play features: support IO module and network automatic configuration, static IPv6 automatic network configuration, system controller automatic time synchronization (also supports NTP server synchronization), default parameters and IO configuration provided, greatly reducing deployment difficulty.

Communication interface: Integrated with 5 RJ45 ports, the port function is automatically detected (supporting display screen, PICUS tool, Modbus TCP, etc.), and all network controllers can be accessed through a single Ethernet connection, with network storm protection capability.

Measurement capability: Supports direct measurement of three-phase AC power, up to 690 V AC, with a measurement accuracy of 0.5 level. Equipped with a 200ms/800ms average filtering function, it can selectively reduce measurement data fluctuations. Filtering only affects display and monitoring data, and does not affect protection and adjustment values.


Controller Types and Exclusive Functions

PPM 300 is divided into 6 types of controllers according to application scenarios, each with its own responsibilities, to achieve precise control and protection of different power equipment:

Core functional modules

Power management function

The core implementation of reliable power supply, efficient operation, and precise load control in the power system includes key functions such as:

Black start protection: Close the bus tie circuit breaker during critical operations; When the speed controller/AVR of the generator set fails, the bus tie circuit breaker trips and disconnects the faulty unit, with a configurable black start recovery strategy;

Rapid load shedding: achieve high-speed load shedding of less than 100ms to cope with sudden situations in the power system;

Load distribution: Supports active power (kW) and reactive power (kvar) load distribution, providing multiple modes of symmetrical/asymmetrical load distribution. Asymmetric mode can automatically recalculate the set value, and exceeding the limit can start the next unit;

Heavy load management: Each controller supports up to 4 fixed/variable heavy load devices, with pre programmed management processes and configurable parameters, and supports digital/analog feedback for heavy load devices;

Busbar management: Each busbar section can be configured with independent power management rules, and each controller supports up to 4 external control circuit breakers (busbars/shore power), supporting multi ring busbar design;

Unit start stop: Supports idle start stop, can be configured with additional preheating/cooling time, load based start stop calculation (2 sets of parameters provided each), unit priority supports manual, dynamic, and runtime options.

Control and protection functions

(1) Circuit breaker control

Support synchronous parallel operation and load shedding before opening, and the operator can manually initiate synchronization and load shedding; Suitable for pulse, compact, and continuous circuit breakers, with circuit breaker position detection and alarm functions, and redundant feedback provided by bus tie circuit breakers and external control circuit breakers.

(2) AC protection function

Comprehensive AC protection covering the power supply side, bus side, and other dimensions, with corresponding ANSI standard codes for each protection item. Some protections are exclusive to specific controllers, and the core protection items are shown in the table below (alarm column numbers are alarm levels):

Note: ACM3.2 differential current module is required for stable differential current/high setting differential current protection.  

(3) Engine interface and safety

Communication: Supports the universal J1939 protocol, communicates with the engine control unit (ECU) through the CAN bus, and reads ECU data;

Safe shutdown: The EIM3.1 module can serve as a safe shutdown module. When communication with the main processor card is interrupted, the EIM3.1 allows the engine to run independently, ensuring system safety.

Redundant Design

PPM 300 adopts a full dimensional redundancy design, which is the core guarantee of high reliability:

Control redundancy: Multiple master stations control without a single master station failure point;

Communication redundancy: controller ring connection, DEIF network ring connection, internal communication ring connection;

Operational redundancy: Controller commands can be sent through four methods: display unit, external input, PICUS software, and Modbus;

Feedback redundancy: The bus tie circuit breaker and external control circuit breaker have redundant position feedback;

Module redundancy: Some modules (such as EIM3.1) can work independently and still achieve core functions without the main controller.

Operations and Configuration Functions

Events and alarms: equipped with real-time clock event and alarm logs, supporting advanced processing functions such as alarm locking and shelving; The controller has hardware self-test function;

Permission management: password protection, supports custom user permissions, can manage passwords and permissions by group/user;

Software and Simulation: Supports software broadcasting and batch upgrade of controller software; Equipped with simulation and monitoring functions, the supporting tools can achieve system operation status simulation;

IO and Curve Configuration: Both analog input and output provide pre configured curves, and each supports up to 20 custom curves, which can detect out of range faults in analog input sensors; Support relay function and coil status configuration;

Data management: Supports IO status viewing, trend tracking value recording, and AC measurement average filtering can be selectively applied to different measurement types.


Supporting software tools

PPM 300 provides two core supporting tools to achieve full process configuration, monitoring, and operation, both of which have user-friendly interfaces:

PICUS: Free PC software with core functions including controller connection, single line diagram design/configuration/broadcasting, flexible application drawing, multi ring connection configuration, permission and password management, controller/display software management, multi language support, IO status viewing, trend tracking;

CustomizaLogic: A logic configuration tool that supports up to 20 input events and 20 output commands per controller. Cross controller communication supports 16 inputs and 16 outputs per unit, and each controller supports up to 20 Modbus signals (input/output). Custom IO can be added to flexible Modbus.


Communication Capability

PPM 300 supports multiple protocols and types of communication, balancing compatibility, redundancy, and security:

Network protocols: Static IPv6 (default), configurable IPv4, PCM3.1 module configurable Ethernet port;

Device communication: CAN bus (communication with ECU), J1939 protocol (engine interface);

Industrial protocol: supports multiple Modbus protocols, can achieve data unit conversion and scaling, and configure Modbus server parameters;

Internal communication: DEIF dedicated network, expansion rack internal communication;

Communication security: equipped with device authentication (to prevent external device interference), password protection (customizable), and network storm protection.
