ABB SACO16D1 1-Pole Power Contactor
The ABB SACO16D1 is a 1-pole power contactor from the highly versatile SACO modular contactor series. Designed for switching single-phase or DC electrical loads, this device is a fundamental component in industrial, commercial and building automation control panels. As a modular unit, it is the core building block of the SACO system, designed to seamlessly integrate with a range of snap-on accessories such as auxiliary contact blocks, mechanical interlocks and pneumatic timers.
Technical Specifications
The ABB SACO16D1 features one main power pole rated for 16A thermal current. The rated operational voltage is up to 690V AC at 50/60 Hz, and the device is also suitable for DC switching applications with appropriate derating. The rated operational current is 16A at AC-1 duty for resistive loads such as heaters, providing approximately 4 kW at 230V AC. For motor loads under AC-3 duty, the rating is typically 3 kW at 230V AC.
The D1 suffix denotes the coil voltage, which is 24V AC or DC in the SACO series. Coil power consumption is approximately 4 VA for AC operation and 2.5 W for DC operation, minimizing control circuit loading. The mechanical life exceeds 10 million operations, and the electrical life exceeds 1 million operations under rated load conditions.

Design and Construction
The SACO16D1 features a modular design that allows easy installation on DIN rails in control cabinets and enclosures. The compact form factor saves panel space while providing full rated performance. The device is constructed with high-quality materials that ensure reliable operation over a long service life. The single-pole configuration provides normally open main contacts that close when the coil is energized.
The contactor can be used as a standalone single-pole switch for single-phase circuits or combined with other contactors to build multi-phase switching assemblies. For three-phase applications, three SACO16D1 units can be mechanically interlocked to provide coordinated switching of all three phases, with auxiliary contact blocks added to provide status feedback to control systems.
Accessory Compatibility
A key advantage of the SACO series is the wide range of snap-on accessories available. Auxiliary contact blocks add additional normally open or normally closed contacts for status signaling or interlocking functions. Mechanical interlocks prevent two contactors from closing simultaneously, essential for reversing starter or transfer switch applications. Pneumatic timers provide time-delayed contact operation for sequencing applications. All accessories snap onto the front or side of the contactor without tools, simplifying field modification and reducing installation time.
Applications
The ABB SACO16D1 is suitable for a broad range of switching applications. In industrial control panels, the contactor switches small motors, solenoid valves, heaters and other single-phase equipment under PLC or relay control. Building automation systems use the contactor for lighting control, HVAC damper actuators and pump control. Commercial applications include vending machines, commercial kitchen equipment and display case lighting. The contactor is also used in machine tool control circuits, packaging machinery and material handling equipment.
