This approach reduces component count, power consumption, and cost compared to designs with separate ADCs per channel. However, the multiplexed architecture means that the channels are not sampled simultaneously; instead, they are sampled sequentially. The sampling rate per channel is 10 Hz (100 ms update time), which is sufficient for most process measurement applications where the process variables change relatively slowly. For applications requiring faster update rates, the module can be configured to scan a subset of channels more frequently. The module includes a sample-and-hold circuit on each channel to minimize settling time errors during multiplexing.

Isolation Architecture

The DSDP140A provides channel-to-system isolation, meaning that all 16 input channels are collectively isolated from the control system backplane. This is different from channel-to-channel isolation, where each channel is isolated from the others. The DSDP140A's common isolation approach is suitable for applications where all field transmitters share a common ground reference or are powered from the same power supply. The isolation is rated at 500V AC for one minute, providing protection against voltage surges and transients. The DSDP140A provides a loop power supply for two-wire transmitters, eliminating the need for an external power supply. The loop power supply is typically 24V DC and is connected in series with the transmitter and the module's input. Because all channels share a common isolation, the loop power supply is common to all channels, which is acceptable when all transmitters are powered from the same source and have the same ground reference. Four-wire transmitters have separate power supply wires and signal output wires. For four-wire transmitters, the DSDP140A's input is connected to the transmitter's output terminals, and an external power supply provides power to the transmitter. The module includes open-circuit detection that reports a fault if the loop current drops below a configurable threshold, typically 3.6 mA.
