Analog Input Measurement

The DSAI130 measures 4-20 mA current loop signals from field transmitters. The 4-20 mA standard is the most common analog signal in process automation because it provides live zero detection and is less susceptible to voltage drops over long cable runs. Each input channel includes a precision 250 ohm burden resistor that converts the 4-20 mA current to a 1-5V voltage signal. This voltage is then digitized by the analog-to-digital converter. The module's resolution is typically 12 bits (4096 counts) for standard versions and 14 bits (16384 counts) for high-resolution versions, providing sufficient granularity for most process measurement applications. The module includes software configurable input filtering to reduce the effects of electrical noise. The digital filter is a first-order low-pass filter with a programmable time constant. The filter can be adjusted from 0 milliseconds (no filtering) to 1000 milliseconds, allowing the user to trade off between noise rejection and response time. Channel-to-system isolation separates all input channels from the I/O backplane and the rest of the control system. This prevents ground loops, which can occur when multiple grounded devices are connected to the same loop, causing unwanted current to flow and introducing measurement errors. The isolation is rated at 500V AC for one minute, providing robust protection against voltage surges and transients. The module also includes input protection circuitry that clamps the input voltage to safe levels in the event of wiring errors or transient overvoltages.

Field Transmitter Connection
