ABB TER800 Bus Terminator
Overview
Definition and function: The ABB TER800 Bus Terminator is a device used to terminate communication buses in industrial automation and control systems. It plays a key role in ensuring the stability, reliability and signal integrity of communication networks. In bus-based communication system architectures, such as some of ABB's Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or fieldbus networks, the correct use of a bus terminator ensures accurate data transmission over the bus by avoiding signal reflections and reducing communication interference.
Principle of operation
Signal termination mechanism: At the end of a communication bus (e.g. Profibus, CAN bus, and other common industrial buses), when a signal is transmitted to the terminals, it will reflect if there is no suitable termination to match it, just as light reflects off a mirror. This reflection interferes with normal signal transmission, resulting in data errors or communication breakdowns. the ABB TER800 Bus Terminator absorbs the signal energy by providing a suitable resistive match (usually a termination resistor) so that the signal is effectively terminated when it reaches the termination, without reflection.
Matching of electrical characteristics: Its electrical characteristics (e.g. impedance, etc.) are designed according to the applied bus standard. For example, for the Profibus DP bus, the termination resistance value is generally around 120Ω. TER800 can precisely provide such matching resistance so that the characteristic impedance of the bus signals can be maintained consistently, thus optimising signal transmission.
Performance Features
High-precision matching: High-precision resistance matching ensures accurate matching with various industry-standard buses. This helps maintain the electrical stability of the communication bus and reduces signal distortion and communication failures caused by mismatched terminals.
Strong compatibility: Compatible with many types of communication buses and communication protocols. Whether it is Profibus, Modbus or other popular industrial buses, as long as their electrical parameters and communication protocols comply with a certain range, TER800 is able to effectively terminate the bus.
High reliability: It adopts high-quality electronic components with good anti-interference ability and stability. It can operate stably for a long time in harsh industrial environments, such as high temperature, high humidity and strong electromagnetic interference in industrial sites, and still ensure the normal performance of its termination function.
Easy to install and maintain: Its design is compact and simple to install. Usually, it can be installed directly on the end node of the bus, or connected to the bus through a simple connection. In terms of maintenance, due to its relatively simple structure, it is easy to troubleshoot and replace when a fault occurs.
Technical parameters
Termination resistance value: Depending on the application scenario and bus type, the termination resistance value will be different. For example, in standard Profibus DP applications, the termination resistance is 120Ω with a tolerance range of ±1% to ensure accurate signal matching.
Operating Voltage Range: Can operate over a wide range of operating voltages, typically supporting a DC voltage range of 9 - 32V to accommodate different power supply conditions.
Operating Temperature Range: It can operate stably in the temperature range of - 20℃ to + 70℃, which makes it possible to be used in a variety of industrial environments, whether it is a cold outdoor or a high-temperature workshop.
Communication protocol compatibility: Compatible with a variety of mainstream industrial communication protocols, such as Profibus DP, PA, CANopen, etc., and has good support for signal transmission rates under different protocols, for example, under Profibus DP, the highest support for the communication rate of 12Mbps.
Application Areas
Industrial automation production line: In the control system of automation production line, such as automobile production line, electronic product assembly line, etc., it is used to terminate the communication bus connecting various automation equipments (e.g. PLC, robots, sensors, etc.) to ensure stable communication between equipments so as to ensure the efficient operation of the production line.
Process control system: In the process control system of chemical, petroleum, electric power and other industries, it is used to terminate the field bus connecting all kinds of field instruments (such as temperature transmitter, pressure transmitter, flowmeter, etc.) and control equipment, to ensure the accurate transmission of data acquisition and control instructions, which is crucial for the safety and stability of the production process.
Intelligent building automation system: In intelligent buildings, it is used to terminate the communication bus connecting various building automation equipment (such as lift control system, HVAC system, lighting control system, etc.), realise the centralized management and cooperative work of various equipments in the building, and improve the level of building intelligence and the efficiency of energy use.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation Requirements
Location selection: It must be installed at the end of the communication bus. In a bus network connecting multiple devices, it is necessary to accurately judge the physical end of the bus and connect TER800 to the bus interface of the last device to achieve correct signal termination.
Connection method: Depending on the bus type and device interface, use the appropriate connection method. In general, it is necessary to make sure that the connection is secure to avoid loose connections leading to poor contact. For buses with plug-socket connections, ensure that the plug is inserted in place and that the pins of the plug and socket correspond correctly.
Maintenance points
Periodic Inspection: Periodically inspect the TER800 for secure connections and cosmetic damage (e.g. cracked case, bent pins, etc.). At the same time, check whether the performance of the termination resistor is normal, you can use professional electrical test equipment to measure whether the termination resistance value is within the specified range.
Troubleshooting: If there are signal transmission problems in the communication system, such as data loss and communication interruption, in addition to checking other communication equipment and lines, it is also necessary to consider whether the TER800 is faulty. You can determine if the problem is with the terminator by the substitution method, by replacing the test with a known normal TER800.
